Farmers in Negros Oriental will be benefited with the 8 billion pesos budget for irrigation projects in the country. The eight billion pesos budget is included for the government’s national budget for the year 2008.
Negros Oriental still has about 19,000 hectares of potential lands which will need the irrigation system. This includes the areas in Tanjay City, Bais City, Nasulog in Canlaon City, Tamlang Valley, Pamplona, Ibayo and Magsaysay in Guihulngan, Mandapaton in La Libertad and Amlan. In these areas, about 10,000 hectares are already in the irrigation development stage. An estimated 2.3 million pesos will be needed to irrigate the remaining 9,000 hectares.
Dexter Patrocinio, an officer of the National Irrigation Administration says that there are now 65 communal irrigation systems providing water to farmlands from Basay to Canlaon. Records of NIA also show that 31 irrigation system projects are now ongoing in the province, covering a total of 5,948 hectares.
