LGU HOUSE CHAIR BATS
FOR SP subpoena powers
Chairman of Local Goverments in the Lower House Rep. George Arnaiz, announced that LGUs from all over the country are wanting to empower Sanggunian members with “subpoena powers” so that the local lawmakers can legislate without enough research in aid of legislation.
This is supported by the majority of LGU committee members themselves who were either ex-colleagues governors or mayors who were elected congressmen in the 14th Congress.
Arnaiz told the CHRONICLE in an interview from Manila that if only to promote justice, equity, and fairness to all , the local law making bodies should be empowered to compel those individuals or corporations to air their testimonies in legislative inquiries, and testify before local sanggunians, city town or province, under pain of penalty or imprisonment or fine or both.
Meanwhile, Rep Josy Limkaichong also told the CHRONICLE that she favors the augmentation of security in the Batasan and Senate premises.
She said that human development, over and above infrastructure is her priority this year. Rep Josy said that it is important to build the confidence of her constituency which for years, she claims, were virtually abandoned except for a few insignificant projects.
