Athletes from different towns and cities in Negros Oriental will slug it out during the Provincial Elimination Games for the chance to represent the province in the upcoming qualifying games for the second Philippine Olympics Festival.
The elimination games slated slated to start this Sunday up to Tuesday in Dumaguete City aims to pluck out the best athletes who will represent Negros Oriental to the Visayas Qualifying Games of the Philippine Olympics Festival on July 23 to 27, 2008 which the province will host, explained Glynda Descuatan, co-chair of the Negros Oriental Sports and Cultural Facilities Board of Management.
In a recent press conference held at the Macias Sports Complex lobby, it was disclosed that 16 local government units (LGUs) have committed to send their local athletes to the elimination games.
The local governments who has already atheletes now in Dumaguete City are Canlaon City , Vallehermoso, Jimalalud, Manjuyod, Bindoy, Mabinay, Amlan, Tanjay, San Jose , Valencia , Bacong, Dauin, Sta. Catalina, Bayawan City , Ayungon and host Dumaguete City .
Provincial Sports Coordinator Ernesto Ravello said that some mayors in the province seemingly do not see sports as their top priority.
“But our objective is to select the best,” said Ravello explaining that potential athletes coming from local government units who have opted not to join in the elimination games will be allowed to represent other participating LGUs.
Of the 16 participating LGUs, Dumaguete topped the chart for sending the most number of entries in practically all sporting events except for power lifting and wrestling.
A host of sports events will be played during the elimination games, including basketball, indoor and beach volleyball, chess, aquatics, sepak takraw, badminton, football, baseball, table tennis, taekwondo, muay thai and table tennis, among others.
Negros Oriental was earlier chosen to host this year’s Visayas Olypic Qualifying Games due to its strong representation before the Philippine Olympics Committee.
Descuatan said that the NOSC Board of Management is eyeing to improve the facilities in the public schools that have been selected as venue for some of the games, such as Negros Oriental State University , Negros Oriental High School , West City Elementary School , North City Elementary School and Dumaguete City High School .
“We might improve the facilities in these areas, if needed,” she said.
