Yap, RFM, SM awardees
of Art Borjal Memorial

As part of the Kalahi Cultural Caregiving Workshop and Conference in line with the celebration of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Month this July spearheaded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) together with the Philippine Center of UNESCO-International Theater Institute headed by Cecile Guidote Alvarez, also NCCA Executive Director, the Art Borjal Memorial Award is being launched to honor not only an outstanding journalist advocate but those who have shared and helped advance the welfare of persons with disabilities.

Art Borjal, a philanthropist, lawyer, journalist, sports leader and one of the founders of the Philippine Star—a daily broadsheet of nationwide circulation in the country—passed away in 2002.

"The award hopes to inspire other people to be a man for others, especially for our differently-abled brothers and sisters. To quote Art Borjal, the real possessions are not what the hands may grasp, but what the heart may hold," enthuses Exec. Director Guidote-Alvarez.

For the first recipients of the Borjal Memorial Award, NCCA and ITI confer it to an individual and two socially-responsible corporations, which include philanthropist Don Emilio Yap, RFM Corporation, and SM Corporation.

Yap, chairman of the Manila Bulletin and Manila Hotel, is a patron to many organizations in support of differently-abled persons; RFM Corporation, under the father-and-son tandem of Jose Concepcion Jr. and Jose Concepcion III, a Philippine-based company engaged in manufacturing and processing of food and non-food businesses in support of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP), which co-incidentally this year produces a cerebral palsy awardee in the person of Richardson Nabor and recognized a blind entrepreneur, Marx Melencio, through the Go Negosyo Award; and SM Corporation, an active proponent to the needs of the community for humanitarian calls especially for disabled persons and during times of disasters, and has hosted exhibits for the differently-abled. Also being cited are the ITI-Earthsavers/NCCA creative team of cultural caregivers to the differently-abled.

The honorees were chosen based on the impact of their contributions to the society in the upliftment and advancement of the plight of PWD's.

The awarding, which coincides with the Cultural Caregiving conference focused on the Kalahi services in the attainment of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UNMDGs) is set to happen at the NCCA Auditorium in Intramuros, Manila on July 22, 2008 from 8am to 5pm.

Serving as one of the highlights is a media interpretation of the Earthsavers Ten (10) Commandments for Disability Prevention designed as part of the eco-desk service of then Senator Heherson Alvarez transposed into poetry by Professor Tomas Ongoco and a rap rhythm version by blind musician Rico del Rosario.
