63 CONVICTED FELONS
FOR SHIPMENT TO BILIBID
Some 63 convicted felons who were sentenced by the courts from one year to life imprisonment are due for shipment to the national penitentiary in Bilibid Prisons.
It would cost the city government some P212,000 to transport and feed these felons with 30 fully armed escorts on a boat ride to Manila.
The city council has approved the appropriation. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology warden Waldimar Villanueva told city officials of the urgency to ship these felons to Bilibid national penitentiary from Dumaguete, because they pose a danger of riot and possible escape because the jail is now quite over crowded over its maximum capacity.
The jail has now 254 male inmates and 37 females with a jail capacity of only 100.
Also the danger of disease outbreak due to the unsanitary condition effected by overcrowding.
The city jail is located in Bajumpandan. It has only 19 male guards and 5 women personnel.
