Boxing Champ Nonito Donaire Showcases Acting Chops in ‘Palad Ta Ang Nagbuot’

After almost a decade, the rebirth of the Visayan Movies is back

Not since the 1991 Gloria Sevilla starrer, “Matud Nila”, then Cesar Montano’s 2004 film, “Panaghoy sa Suba”, has the Visayan movie industry had a needed boost to awaken it from its slumber.

Based on a 1969 classic which starred Gloria Sevilla and Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, and directed by Leroy Salvador, MYR Productions proudly presents a movie that with touch your hearts.

“PALAD TA ANG NAGBUOT” (Our Fate Decides) is a story of Love, Dreams and of Destiny, and stars the Queen of the Visayan movies, Ms. GLORIA SEVILLA, and ably supported by GARRY LIM, MAX SURBAN, DIONNE MONSANTO and MON CONFIADO. Introducing KRISSEL VALDEZ, runner-up to Angeline Quinto in ABS-CBN’s Starpower Search for the Next Sing Superstar.

And in his first starring role, World Boxing Champion, NONITO “The Filipino Flash” DONAIRE.

“I was pleasantly surprised at Nonito’s acting. Being a neophyte in the movies, and a boxer at that, I never expected him to perform the way he did”, says co-star and award winner, Gloria Sevilla. Colin Seymour of Examiner.com writes, “He is particularly good at dancing and crying. It (the movie) may not rate consideration for awards at Cannes or Sundance, but it’s a highly entertaining and soulful 90 minutes, particularly if you’re Visayan or a boxing fan.”

“PALAD TA ANG NAGBUOT” is the story of Dodong, an orphan and jack-of-all-trades, who along with other Visayans, moves to Metro Manila in search of greener pastures. Dodong eventually falls in love and marries Inday, granddaughter of Angeling, who hones her to become a singing superstar to get them out of poverty. Unfortunately, love took the better of Inday.

An accident puts the lives of Inday, her unborn child and grandma Angeling in danger and Dodong has to come up with money for their medical procedures. Forced to compete in a local boxing match, Dodong, is able to come up with the funds. But as fate would have it, things don’t turn out the way he expects them to.

“I’ve always wanted to continue the work of my father, who was known then as the “King of the Visayan Movies” until his untimely death in 1969 in a place crash. Since then, I have never stopped dreaming of accomplishing the task. And I promise you, you will see the Nonito Donaire no one has even seen before,” as producer Dandin Ranillo puts it.

Based on initial mixed audience reaction during an initial screening in Vallejo, the common response was, “Nonito first made us laugh, then made us cry.”

The movie and its main actor have already aroused a lot of interest. Even HBO is interested in using footages in their interview with Donaire for his up-coming fight against WBC Champion Toshiaki Nishioka.

From the pen of Dandin Ranillo and Marie Mamawal, and Cinematography of Jun Pereira, “PALAD TA ANG NAGBUOT” is the first directorial job of DANDIN RANILLO.

The movie is slated for exhibition on October 31 in a theater near you. For non-Visayan areas, an English-subtitled version will be exhibited. Special screenings are also held abroad.
