Karapatan personalities declared persona non-grata
One official and two personalities from the group Karapatan were declared persona non-grata by the barangay officials of Linantuyan, Guihulngan City.
In a Barangay Resolution number 15, series of 2008 endorsed last Friday, the personalities declared persona non-grata of the officials of Barangay Linantuyan were Fred Cana who is Karapatan’s secretary general in the Negros Island, Felipe Gele and Zara Alvarez.
More or less 800 residents of Barangay Linantuyan rallied last Saturday to show their resistance against Karapatan which was earlier forbidden to enter Barangay Linantuyan by virtue of an earlier barangay resolution.
The rally was attended by Barangay Captain Elpidio Vilar and his barangay kagawads. In an interview over DYEM Energy FM Dumaguete Tonight, Captain Vilar said that Karapatan did honor the barangay officials of Linantuyan which did not allow the human rights group to enter their barangay to conduct an investigation of their alleged military abuses happening in the area.
Because of this, the barangay officials were forced to produce a resolution declaring Cana, Gelle and Alavarez as persona non-grata. The barangay resolution further disclosed that Karapatan was very loud in exposing allegations which were not true. It also stated that Gelle questioned the power of the barangay officials of barangay Linantuyan.
