COMMENTARY AUG 8 GANG TRUCE
Credit PNP for gang truce
The city police department deserves a pat on the back for effecting a gang truce between Bloods and Crips , the two notoriously known hip hop gangs who have started to wreck part of the peace condition of the city.
For nipping the bud so to speak, Col Dionard Carlos, chief of police; Kagawad Alan Cordova, SP law and order committee chairman; and the city mayor Tuting Perdices, should be cited for recognizing the urgency for the two street gangs to halt their “hostilities.”
The more difficult part now is how to maintain the peace. We know that the kind of peace is still on the uneasy stage. It behooves upon each gang to exhort its members to respect the covenant or peace agreement which they signed in closed doors but is now exposed to the public by the media courtesy of Col. Carlos.
The second difficult part is for the city government to devise ways and means to keep the street gangs busy with productive endeavors so that they will not resort to street competitions as to who is more energetic in violence, but in worthwhile community projects.
They should now focus on how to strive to become effective citizens of this city, and even its future leaders.
We would also like to pay tribute to their parents whom we know have had sleepless nights thinking and hopefully praying for the welfare of their growing teenagers.
We ask the parents for QUALITY TIME for their children, and develop that kind of bonding that is God-centered and not centered on the pleasures of this world like money which cannot buy happiness.
Finally, the community , to help the police monitor any violation of the peace agreement which must be stop at the slightest resumption lest the situation exacerbates.
In their peace agreement, the BLOODS and CRIPS gang leaders signed saying
That they understood their moral responsibility and obligation to society to promote peace rather than violence; that they are committed to stop all sorts of violence be it physical, emotional or financial between themselves and others; and finally that-
“henceforth, this peace agreement will bind us as brothers and sisters in the eyes of God and as true blooded Dumaguetenos.” So help them God.
