NPAs harass Brgy. Trinidad, carabao dead
Last August 18, 2008 at about 2:30 in the morning SOT Platoon of Bravo Coy 11 Infantry Battalion under the leadership of 2LT Larry M. Solomon heard sporadic gunfire just about 150 meters northeast of their position while they were resting in their temporary patrol base in Sitio Candalanon, Barangay Trinidad, Guihulngan City. The gunfire lasted not more than 5 minutes with the rebels withdrawing towards the direction of Sitio Casanday of the same barangay for fear of a military counter-offensive. A carabao was later found dead due to the NPA’s strafing.
The carabao that was killed is owned by Virgilo Jakosalem, brother of former Bayan Muna Chairman Veteliano Jakosalem whose house is situated near the army’s temporary encampment. The army assisted Jakosalem in filing a blotter with the Barangay and he expressed his anger with the NPA and those few individuals who are adamantly supporting them. He suspects that some militant personalities were somewhat involved in the harassment leading to the death of his carabao and endangering his home and family. He is thankful that it was just his working animal that was hit and not himself or his family. A similar complaint against the NPA’s Leonardo Panaligan Command will also be prepared and forwarded to the attention of Mr. Jess Canete of CHR Negros Oriental.
According to LTC. Gacal, Commanbder 11 IB, similar attacks have been perpetrated in this former guerilla base barangay since the residents withdrew their support from the rebels.
11IB Troopers have been deployed for more than 5 months in Barangay Trinidad and in the process gaining the hearts and minds of the residents. Gacal also added that Barangay Trinidad was categorized as a Communist-influenced barangay before the entry of the army.
