NEGROS COCONUT INDUSTRY AT RISK
The Provincial Coconut Authority of the Province of Negros Oriental is challenging all farmers, barangay officials and the general public to check, monitor and report any possible signs of destruction to coconut trees as the province is close to the province of Bohol where four barangays have already been reported as infested with Brontispa beetle.
The coconut industry Negros Oriental is still safe from the infestation of this beetle but the authorities are making sure that possible carriers of the Brontispa Beetle could not get inside the province unnoticed.
It has been supposed that the entry of this destructive beetle to the country maybe coming from the countries like Thailand and the Maldives which are importing seedlings and nuts of ornamental plants in the Phillipines.
With this, Enrico Amores, the Plant Quarantine Officer of the Department of Agiculture assures the public that they are inspecting land, sea and air transportations to ensure the banning on the entry of all kinds of plant materials, palms, and coconut seedlings to the the country. Even plants, palms and seedlings transported with shipping permits are confiscated.
