Prov’l Atty defends military, CHR
Provincial Attorney Erwin Vergara defended the military and the Commission on Human Rights which was alleged as the mouthpieve of the military.
During the Committee hearing yesterday morning, Atty Vergara expressed that the military is very much different compared to the past. He said that in fact, there were already soldiers who committed abuses who were imprisoned and were properly punished.
Atty Vergara also defended CHR Special Investigator Jesus Cañete who was tagged by Karapatan as the spokesperson of the military because of the result of his investigation on alleged human rights abuses in Barangay Linantuyan in Guihulngan which Cañete disclosed was not done by the military. Because of this finding, Karapatan was enraged with him.
According to Atty Vergara, there was a fair investigation conducted by Cañete and that Cañete does not fear the army, the police of even the NPA. Atty Vergara added that he will stand firm that the military of today is already very much different compared to the military before.
He said that the present army leadership here in the province of Negros Oriental did not do any cover up to its subordinates who have committed any irregularity.
