Local Press creates Legal Defense Committee
A legal committee is now being organized here in order to defend media personalities from harassments. The Dumaguete Kapihan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) and the Dumaguete Press Club organized a lega; defense committee yesterday which is consisted of practicing journalists.
The committee is tasked to evaluate the cases of harassments against mediamen from officials or personalities who only wish to zip the press indirectly through threats or filing of libel charges whenever anomalies and irregularities are exposed.
To head the legal defense committee from the working media is Rene Genove who is the Dumaguete Bureau Chief of the Bacolod based publication Visayan Daily Star. To co-chair is Roy Bustillo who is the president of the KBP-Dumaguete Chapter.
The creation of the legal defense committee is the result of the recent press conference called upon by a mayor who allegedly used the press conference in order to insult and criticize a media outfit because of its report concerning a Commission on Audit report regarding his town which raged the mayor.
Instead of calling the attention of the concerned media outfit, the mayor called for a press conference from other media institutions except the concerned one. The mediamen are then afraid that some of the officials use media entities to destroy another media outfit.
Because of this, in a meeting at the Dumaguete Press Club Building, it has been decided to create a legal defense committee which will evaluate harassment cases against the members of the press. However, only meritorious cases which will be honored and will get free legal assistance courtesy of the legal counsel of the Press Club who will defend the local mediamen.
