PORT STRIKE AFFECTS THE CONSUMING PUBLIC

Board Member Melimore Saycon said that the problem on the dispute between a private arrastre company and stevedores in the port will not just affect the business sector but will also bring great impact to the consuming public.
Because of the porter’s refusal to return to work that has been demanded by the Department of Labor and Employment, businessmen in the province are threatening to increase their prices due to their extra payment for cargoes as it is still not allowed in the Dumaguete City port.
The businessmen are then looking for other means to transport their goods.
Even small vendors are complaining for the extra amount they pay on transportation of their products.
Due to all of these, Saycon is setting a meeting with Labor Secretary Arturo Brion.
He wanted to know the reason why DOLE was not able to solve the problem when under the Labor Law, DOLE should settle the dispute following a status quo when the public interest is already affected.
