Duran, Infante Stand independent in city council
ABC President Raul Infante and SK President Athena Duran proved that they are independent minded in the city council by standing on their principles against yesterday’s approval of the 2008 budget.
Councilor Athena Duran raised three points why she disagrees with the 2008 budget during her privilege speech yesterday. First, according to Duran, the allocations in the budget are questionable and there are no definite specifications as to where the mo0ne should go. Second, she questions the hiring of consultants and retainers sin the government when there are officials in the city who can do the job. This means that the city officials lack knowledge, she added. She also questions the honoraria that will be allocated to judges, special court judges and prosecutors.
Duran explained that the employees of the judiciary have high salaries and many benefits.
Duran suggested that instead of giving the money to the judiciary personnel, the money will be given to barangay tanods, traffic enforcers and street sweepers in the city who have low salaries.
Third, Duran disapproves the realignment of the Php 700, 000 medical and public assistance fund for the councilors. The fund is supposed to be used by councilors for their constituents who ask for assistance.
Duran disclosed that the 2008 budget does not intend to help the lowly and poor Dumaguetenos.
