2 soldiers wounded in NPA encounter
Two soldiers coming from the 79th Infantry Battalion were wounded during an encounter which happened yesterday at about 5 o’clock in the afternoon in Sitio Milagrosa, Sta. Catalina.
The soldiers who were slightly wounded were identified by Lt.Col. Erwin Bernard Neri, Commanding Officer of the 79th Infantry Masaligan Battalion, as Private First Class Ronnie Maquilan and Corporal Mario Calvin.
PFC Maquilan was the only one brought to a hospital here after he was hit on his left arm during the fire exchange which lasted for 30 minutes. Corporal Calvin was only slightly hit by a shrapnel on his left arm and is just recovering at their camp.
After the 30-minute battle, the military overrun a harbor site. Recovered were personal items, pots, sacks of rice, subversive documents and one M14 armalite with a magazine containing bullets, 3 improvised anti-personnel mines, back packs and others.
Col. Neri said a member of the NPA could be wounded as what the bloods stains found at the pathway of the rebels attest. Neri disclosed that a squad from the 79th Infantry Battalion was patrolling the area when they met the about 40 NPAs to which the encounter materialized.
