Teves calls for strengthening PCIC
By ED.SESTOSO
Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Henry Teves is pushinbg for the strengthening of the government’s Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) in order to address the woes of both farmers and fisherfolks in the province and elsewhere in the country.
The solon explained at the present system, the farmers and fisherfolks are not considered by PCIC and other related financial agencies as “bankable”, thereby prohibiting them to avail the assistance they need in the event of calamities and other related agricultural crisis.
The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) was created under Presidential Decree 1467 on June 11, 1978 .
Presently, its principal mandate is to provide insurance protection to the country?s agricultural producers, particularly the subsistence farmers, against crop losses arising from natural calamities such as typhoons, floods, drought, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as well as plant diseases and pest infestation.
Non-crop agricultural asset losses due to perils for which the asset has been insured against will still be evaluated by the corporation.
However, the solon pointed out that this is noweasily stated but had not been done by the corporation on our lowly farmers who are hit by calamities.
He said that he is willing to support any solon who is pushing for the strengthening of the PCIC, but if there is none, he will personally do it.
He said that the need is very immediate since farmers are also experiencing an upcoming dry spell.
Teves was also present during the public hearing initiated by the Committee on Agriculture and Food headed by Rep. Abraham Kahlil Mitra held at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex.
